Kohala

Kohala, Hawaii, HI

The basics

Although the region only comprises six percent of the Big Island's total area, it could still take weeks to explore in its entirety. Most visitors to South Kohala are familiar with the resort enclaves of Waikoloa and Mauna Lani, where golf courses sit in stark contrast to the surrounding black lava fields. Further up the road in the North Kohala plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, travelers will find artisan outposts of craft stores and coffee shops.

Rugged valleys with sing-song names such as Pololu, Waipio, and Waimanu form deep clefts in the lush mountainside and are a favorite of island hikers and thrill-seekers. Waterfall trekking and jungle ziplining are popular in these outdoor playgrounds, and Waipio Valley is regarded as one of the most scenic corners of the island. Off-road vehicle tours often include guided hikes, while a helicopter tour is ideal for aerial views of the Kohala Coast.

Lots of fun
My daughter and I had a wonderful time with our hosts Curtis and Brogan. They were both fun, outgoing and full of energy. We felt both safe and eager to cross over the many wooden bridges and zip threw the canopy Hawaii. Both men were very professional and offer interesting information about area, trees and plants. Thanks for a great vacation experience 🌹

Amazing Zip

Big Island Kohala Canopy Zipline Adventure
Having never zip lined before I truly did not know what to expect. Our guides, Braxton and Kat, were positively amazing. They were welcoming and friendly and their attention to safety alleviated any concerns I harbored. Halfway through our zip line I only wanted to go on longer. We had a group of eight and where we all started as strangers because of Brax’s and Kat’s infectious enthusiasm we were all friends by the end. I can’t recommend Kohala zip lines enough. I had the time of my life.

Our guides Kyra and Daven was very entertaining and showed much Aloha. You get to cruise through Kohala in their truck and get to even see the statue of King Kamemeha. Can’t forget the massage chairs while off-roading to the lines!

Big Island Kohala Zip and Dip Tour from Kona
Erik was a wonderful guide from pick up to drop off. He gave us lots of history and information about the nature of the Big Island. Kyreah joined Erik as a guide and made those of us that were a little nervous feel comfortable! The zip-lining was fun with a double line at the end. The picnic lunch was tasty in an amazing location. The hike to the waterfall was beautiful and the “dip” was exhilarating! Both the guide and tour company were extremely professional. They had everything you needed including towels, rain jackets, walking sticks, and bags. Erik also gave us suggestions for a beach to visit and a restaurant which we loved! Definitely a must do!

Volcano and Kohala Landing Helicopter Tour on the Big Island from Kona
Awesome experience. Page, our helicopter pilot was very knowledgeable and did a great job flying over the active volcano and turning around several times so both sides of the helicopter could see the lava. The Big Island is breathtaking and can’t be accessed by car in a lot of areas. You really can’t appreciate the island until you get into a helicopter to see it for yourself. Highly recommended this tour and company.

A Must If You Want To Really Experience the Island!

Volcano and Kohala Landing Helicopter Tour on the Big Island from Kona
Taking this helicopter tour was one of the best decisions I've made in a very long time. I love experiencing as much as I can about new destinations I travel to, their culture, history, geography, etc. With the helicopter tour you see the island in ways you can't see with ground tours or trekking on your own. With a knowledgeable and easy-going pilot makes the experience better. It allows for an excursion that is unequal and memorable that will stay with you. I was able to see the lava bursts which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'll never forget. Then add the jaw dropping views of the coast makes this excursion a must for travelers to the island. I've already told my friends about it.

Things to know before you go

  • A must-see for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers wanting to venture into remote areas.
  • Trips last anywhere from 3 to 8 hours, depending on the option you choose.

How to get there

The section of Highway 270 from Kawaihae toward Hawi up to the Pololu Lookout hugs the dramatic coastline. Further inland, Highway 250 toward Waimea takes you along the Kohala ridge. For those who’d prefer not to rent a car, most tours offer pickup and drop-off at Kohala and Waikoloa hotels and include a drive up the Kohala coastline. Helicopter tours typically provide a round-trip transfer to the Kona airport, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) away.

When to get there

During the annual King Kamehameha Day celebrations each June, the namesake statue presiding over Kapaau is draped in flower leis. During humpback whale season (late December through March), migrating humpbacks join spinner dolphins and other marine life offshore.

Hawaiian History Buffs and Ocean Bluffs

The white sands of Hapuna Beach are a favorite of beachgoers, but history buffs will love Pu’ukohola Heiau, which was commissioned by King Kamehameha. While this National Historic Site sees thousands of annual visitors, only a mere handful will make the journey to the smaller Mo’okini Heiau on windswept Upolu Point. Constructed in the 5th century AD by some of the earliest Polynesian voyagers, this is also where King Kamehameha was born.
