The Basics

The Diamond Head trail is 1.6 miles (2.6 kilometers) round-trip, gaining over 550 feet (168 meters) from the trailhead to the summit and affording amazing views of the island and the Pacific Ocean. Unless you're trying to be the first one up to the Diamond Head summit in the morning, enjoy the hike at a steady pace and take in the views on the way—travelers usually allot one to two hours for the Diamond Head crater hike. This crater adventure is often included on Oahu city tours or circle island tours that take in a number of Hawaiian landmarks and historic sites such as Manoa Falls, Pearl Harbor, and the North Shore. Consider taking a guided Diamond Head tour to learn the history and local stories surrounding the popular crater.

Loads of fun
Our tour guide, John (AKA Tater Tot) was awesome. He was humorous, engaging and shared a lot of history regarding the island of Oahu. Hiking up Diamond Head is not for the faint at heart; it's an ominous trek. I stopped climbing at the 7 mile marker. I loved trying some of the local foods. And enjoyed the beautiful scenery. There were an adequate number of stops for photo ops on this tour.

Diamond Head Hiking and Oahu Island Experience feat. North Shore
We loved starting the day hiking Diamond head! Beautiful views. Our guide John was very knowledgeable about the Island! Another favorite was spotting the turtles. It was nice to have someone drive so we could enjoy the amazing view. Thanks to Jonah for being a great communicator and accommodating as we changed our pick up place last minute.

Half-Day Hiking Tour to Diamond Head and Makapuu Lighthouse
Both hikes are a must do. The Diamond Head is a more difficult hike but worth it. Bring a good pair of shoes and a good camera for both. The shuttle was on time and the drivers where great especially Cousin Mark.

Half-Day Hiking Tour to Diamond Head and Makapuu Lighthouse
The views were great. The drivers were knowledgeable about the sites and places we passed along the way. The hikes were self-guided. Our tour was broken up into two days which was good since doing both in the same day may have been challenging due to the grades involved. The Lighthouse path was paved and relatively easy uphill walk and some stairs. The Diamond Head trail was a more challenging climb with mixed surfaces including dirt and rocks, semi-dark tunnels and stairs.

Kelly was a great guide and very entertaining and informative. We loved the ride and climb to Diamond Head Crater! And, as most travelers said, the fish tacos at the end were delicious!!

Diamond Head Hiking Narrated Tour
Beautiful views along the hike. Don’t rush…take plenty of water. The narrated tour pointed out several points of interest on the way up and down the hike. Make sure to stop and rest several times. The morning we were there (8:30 am) it was already very hot…they had to fly helicopter rescue missions and get people that were physically sick from trying to make it to the top. Don’t rush!

Diamond Head/Waikiki Tour (Most Popular Tour!)
We had to audible and do a different tour. BUT it was really fun and totally different than I expected. It was nice going to a less crowded area and exploring things we never would have if we didn't go on this tour! Highly recommend and they have great communication!

Diamond Head Hiking and Oahu Island Experience feat. North Shore
Our guide was punctual, courteous and knew great spots to stop for things that weren't even on our agenda, like coffee and local foods and seaturtle viewing. He was also a very safe driver which I appreciated very much.

Diamond Head Hiking and Oahu Island Experience feat. North Shore
I am so glad I chose this tour. We were able to see a lot in one day. We started with a hike up diamond head. The view is great. Jon allowed us ample time to hike and enjoy the view. We saw sea turtles in the water on one of the beach. Jon is a great driver and tour guide. He is very knowledgeable and accommodating to everyone. I would highly recommend this tour.

How to Get There

The best way to reach Diamond Head Crater hiking trail is by foot, bike, guided tour, car, or the local bus. There is limited parking if you choose to drive; many travelers opt to take The Bus to the Diamond Head State Monument bus stop.

When to Get There

Diamond Head State Monument opens at 6am and closes at 6pm daily, with last entry at 4:30pm. Considering over 2,000 people hike up the famous volcanic crater each day, you'll never have the trail completely to yourself, unless you start your day with a race to the top. Though crowds are heavy almost every day, Tuesdays tend to be especially heavy since one of Oahu's most popular sights—Hanauma Bay—is closed. The best time to beat the heat is early in the morning, and there's usually a line in front of the gate for the 6am opening. Diamond Head tours also arrive pretty early, so hiking late in the day may sometimes help you beat the crowds. If you plan to hike up Diamond Head in winter, keep an eye out for humpback whales that leap from the waters offshore.

Diamond Head History

In Hawaiian, the mountain is known as ‘Leahi’—the name Diamond Head comes from British sailors who found calcite crystals embedded in the mountain and falsely claimed they were diamonds.
