Bramante Staircase (Scala del Bramante)

Vatican Museums, Vatican City, Rome

The Basics

Many visitors mistake Giuseppe Momo's 1930s staircase for the historic Bramante Staircase, but the original was built more than 400 years earlier and is closed to the general public. Only private groups led by an official Vatican-approved tour guide are authorized to visit the elegant Renaissance staircase.

Some small-group guided tours of the Vatican Museums—among the most popular attractions in Italy—include access to the Bramante Staircase. Book in advance to avoid long ticket and entry lines. Extended tours generally also include stops in the Painting Gallery (Pinacoteca), Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, Gallery of the Candelabra, the Sistine Chapel with its frescoes by Michelangelo, and the Raphael Rooms before moving on the St. Peter's Basilica.

Excellent tour and our guide Zara was very knowledgeable, patient and considerate. The tour was suppose to be 4 1/2 hours and she spent 5 hours with us. This tour is a bit tiring but well worth it

Vatican Museums Tour with Bramante Staircase, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's
We took the Walks of Italy (tour company) "Vatican Museums Tour with Bramante Staircase, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica" with early entry. Vasco was our guide. He really knew his art history and was a top rate Vatican tour guide. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and set up the "big tear" as we entered the Sistine Chapel. A wonderful museum and an unforgettable experience.

Vatican, Bramante, and Review

Vatican Museums Tour with Bramante Staircase, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's
Sara was GREAT!!! Her knowledge of the Vatican and surrounding area (the Vatican City) is Amazing! History, History, History! The Vatican is not just about the Pope. It is about Vatican City and the way the rest of Italy (and the world) has been in contact with Rome. Sara gives a tour which is deep in history. I wish there was more time on that tour!

Vatican Museums Tour with Bramante Staircase, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's
I recommend doing this extended tour to any- and everyone. It was my first time in the Vatican and wanted to see as much as possible. I was so glad I did it, our guide VASCO from City Wonders was amazing! He was knowledgeable and well-spoken. The views from the Bramante Staircase were beautiful. I would do this over again.

Loved this tour. But found it hard to concentrate on some of the details being said due to poor pronunciation of our guide.

Insider's View of the Vatican Museum

Vatican Museums Tour with Bramante Staircase, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's
An opportunity to see some areas of the Vatican Museums that are not open to everyone and less crowded. The Bramante Staircase was great. There is only one way into the Sistine Chapel so you will be competing with the crowds there regardless. Nice to skip the line into St. Peter's. The tour is brief there - just the highlights- but once you are in you can stay as long as you like.

This was my 3rd visit to the Vatican Museums and it was by far the best! Our tour guide Francesca O. was fantastic!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is a security check at the entrance to the Vatican Museums, so items like pocket knives, corkscrews, and umbrellas must be left at the coat check.

  • If your Vatican tour includes entry to the Sistine Chapel, be sure to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

  • Vatican tours generally require quite a bit of walking, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

  • The Bramante Staircase is not wheelchair accessible.

When to Get There

The museums are most crowded at midday, so opt for a morning (or early-access) tour or plan a visit in the offseason winter months if you prefer a quieter experience.
