The Basics

Most Tivoli tours departing from Rome include visits to both Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. At the latter, tour archaeological ruins of temples, libraries, and thermal baths, including the Maritime Theater, the grand Piazza d’Oro, the Imperial Palace, and the Canopus. At Villa d’Este—commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito—admire views from the Vialone Terrace and the picture-perfect Oval Fountain. To get the most out of your visit, opt for a full- or half-day guided tour through the Lazio countryside.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Joseph, our guide, was wonderful. He was full of knowledge about each villa and the town of Tivoli. There were nuances about each villa that we would not have understood without Joseph. Would prefer to have a little more time to explore Villa d’Este fountains/gardens rather than shopping. Lunch was included in our tour and it was delicious.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Wonderful tour! We were very lucky, with tourism way down in Rome there were only 5 people on the tour, it was like a personal tour with Giuseppe. He is an excellent tour guide, patient, took the time to make sure we were happy with the tour all along the way. Of course, he is well versed in the history and answered all of our questions during the tour. Two points: 1. Very easy to find the meeting place, the number 224 is posted on the building (higher up than you might expect) 2. We did not include the lunch. While we found the selected restaurant to be fine, but we like to do our own thing for lunch, typically a small meal. That said, the lunch that they provided was "large", actually too much for us to have for lunch. One couple did include the lunch, and it seemed like a typical Italian multi course meal. Overall, excellent day with a knowledgeable guide.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Great day trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. Both sites were worth seeing and the tour guide helped the ruins come alive. And, the fountains at villa d’este were so beautiful. Definitely go!

Private Tour:Tivoli Villa D'Este
It was beautiful! However, it has a ton of stairs. Also, unless you are very interested in the stories behind the fountains, save your money on the audio guide. You won't miss it, and it allows you to just take in the beauty.

Tour to Tivoli, villa d'Este, half day from Rome
Tivoli villa has beautiful gardens and fountains. It was nice to get out of the city and see some of the country side. After visiting the villa it is clear why they are a UNESCO world heritage site. The self guided tour provided by the villa was sufficient to understand and gain appreciation for the villa. Tivoli is very cute and fun to walk around as well. I recommend this trip to those who want to see more of the area outside of Rome.

I cant recall our guides name but she was fantastic. This place is full of history and considering its age is very well preserved.

Heritage Site: Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli Tour from Rome
Benjamin was our remarkable tour guide to Hadrian's Villa & Villa d'Este, and was superb! He has a wealth of information, which he shares in such as way as to make things come alive again! The weather was perfect, photos excellent, and Benjamin's professionalism was outstanding. As a return visitor to Rome, I had long waited to visit Villa Adriano. I was not disappointed in the least! Highly recommended to make this a "must do" visit!

When to Get There

The Villa d'Este is open from 8:30am until the late afternoon or evening depending on the season, while Hadrian's Villa has slightly shorter hours, again depending on the season. Given Tivoli’s many gardens, spring is a great time to visit.

What to do in Lazio, Italy

Like Rome, Tivoli is set in the Italian region of Lazio. Although the Italian capital is the main draw for most visitors, take some time to visit the rejuvenating thermal waters of the Baths of Bagnaccio or the tumbling Monte Gelato waterfalls. And the weird and wonderful world of the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo (Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo) is an underrated gem.
