Montalcino Fortress (Fortezza di Montalcino)

Tue–Sun 9am–6pm
Piazzale della Fortezza, Montalcino , Tuscany, 53024

The basics

Built in 1361, Montalcino’s dramatic 5-sided fortress encloses a cobbled courtyard and chapel, and is topped by crenelated ramparts and soaring towers. Explore the fortress on a wine tour from Florence, Rome, or Siena: take in the views over the vineyards and olive groves of the Val d’Orcia and sit down for a tasting of local Brunello wines in the cellar wine shop. Most wine-tasting day trips stop in a number of picturesque villages that dot Tuscany’s wine country—including Montepulciano, Pienza, and San Gimignano—and include lunch featuring Tuscany’s famed cuisine.

Wonderful!!
This was such a special magical day. Mattia was an amazing guide who brought some magic to the day. The wines were delicious, and we all learned so much. A simple but perfect lunch made even more magical by the spectacular surroundings. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Small-Group Brunello di Montalcino Wine-Tasting Trip from Siena
This tour is highly recommended. We were only in Siena a few nights, but so glad we gave this trip a go. Will, our driver, was brilliant - so friendly, funny, factual and accommodating and built great rapport with each of us. The things we learnt, the sites we saw and the wines we tasted were great! I don’t want to spoil any surprises for future guests, but the secondary winery/lunch really is incredible - cava doviche! This is great tour and gave a great taste for any budding wine drinkers!

Half-Day Brunello di Montalcino Wine Tour from Siena
I think it was a great wine tasting tour. The guide was exellent and the farms and tastings very very good. Only 7 people in a small van also made it easy and enjoyable.

Half-Day Brunello di Montalcino Wine Tour from Siena
Daniel and Fabio were excellent drivers, expertly handling the winding roads. Daniel provided us with interesting details about the region, its history and the wines. Both of our wine tours were lively and engaging with large pours of excellent Brunello! We even were able to make a stop for pictures in the beautiful Val D’Orcia! Highly recommend this for your next stay in Tuscany!

We had a great time on this tour! Our guide was very friendly and told us the best places to see in the towns we went to visit. The wineries were great and authentic as well, we even bought some bottles to take home! The tour was very much worth the price, we had an awesome time!

San Gimignano, Chianti, and Montalcino Day Trip from Siena
FABIO, our tour guide made this trip 110/100. He was beyond amazing, explained the history, culture, wine, everything with such enthusiasm. The stops are great, two wineries, generous lunch, two cities, and plenty of free time in the cities to roam, and partake in additional tastings if you prefer, which we did! Fabio also went out of the way to get us to some very nice scenic lookouts that were off the beaten path! Highly recommend you ask for Fabio, he really made our tour fun!!

Small-Group Brunello di Montalcino Wine-Tasting Trip from Siena
We really liked the quaintness of the lunch and wine tasting, very tasty and personable. The 3 vineyards we visited were all unique with their own spin on how to create a memorable product. The wines we tasted were wonderful and varied for the regions the vines came from to give a good sense of the product of the region. Great experience that was limited to small group of 8.

How to get there

By car, take the SR2 highway south from Siena and walk up to the fortress from the historic center. Arriving by public transportation involves multiple bus connections, so visiting with a tour that includes transportation is a more convenient option.

When to get there

One of the biggest draws of the Fortezza di Montalcino is the views over the surrounding countryside, particularly beautiful in spring and fall. Otherwise, choose a clear, mild day so you can enjoy visiting the outdoor ramparts and towers.

The Long History of Montalcino’s Fortress

In the Middle Ages, Montalcino was an important town thanks to its proximity to the Via Francigena pilgrimage route between France and Rome, but after falling under the control of the Republic of Siena, the town was often embroiled in skirmishes over territory with Florence. Montalcino was the last Tuscan town to hold out against the might of the Medicis: Siena fell in 1555 and Montalcino was subjected to a four-year siege, though the fortress never fell to Florentine troops. Cosimo I added its imposing ramparts in 1571, but the Fortezza lost its military significance soon after; over the years it housed a community of Benedictine monks but gradually fell into disrepair before restorations took place in the 1940s.
