The Basics

One of Malta’s most atmospheric destinations, Mdina is a common stop on many hop-on hop-off tour bus routes. Sightseeing tours departing from Valletta often include a guided visit of Mdina, as well as making stops at Rabat, the Blue Grotto cave network, the Hagar Qim temple complex, and Golden Bay. To see Mdina at its most tranquil, opt for a night tour and explore the city’s peaceful streets after the day-tripping crowds have departed.

Malta Private Minivan Tour: Popeye village/Mdina/Valletta & Many More
My sister and I went to Malta for a very short trip. We wanted to visit the most of the Island and thus booked this tour. Our experience was Amazing !!!! The driver was very professional and caring. He gave us very interesting information about the sites and local products. We also had extra time to finish our dinner at a delicious Maltese restaurant. The car, with air conditioning, was clean and fresh. We enjoyed it !

Mdina and Rabat Insider's Tour
To me, the best part of this tour is that Christian doesn't feel like a "tour guide". Instead, more of a friend that was having a conversation with you while you take a stroll through town. I am sure that's one of the reasons why everything he said felt very genuine. Nothing felt scripted. Thanks again for such a wonderful tour Christian, I hope I'd get to come back and have a chat with you again soon

Touring Mdina and Rabat with Cristian was amazing. He gave many insights only a true local can know! It was fun and the cities were pretty empty in the afternoon. We’d recommend everybody to pick Cristian’s tour :)

Malta Private Minivan Tour: Popeye village/Mdina/Valletta & Many More
We were pleased with the ease of pick up as well as the number of stops we made throughout Malta. Our guide provided excellent communication leading up to the trip and although we weren’t able to squeeze in all the the stops we had discussed he did his best to allow for as much as possible. We discovered some hidden/locals only stops along the way as well. Great value!

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and very patient with such a large group. Seeing Mdina was the absolute highlight for me. I enjoyed all of the sights we visited and also the restaurant where we all had lunch was a beautiful building and something different was the refrigerated air conditioning :)

Excellent Day

Full-Day Mosta, Mdina, and Rabat Tour from Valletta
We had a good start to the tour with Malta 5D where we watched a short movie on the history and culture of Malta with 3D effects.Next we visited a filigree studio and a glass blowing shop where we were able to watch artisans at work. Our next stop was Mosta Parish and the Rotunda. The Church dates back to the early 1600's and has the largest dome that is supported only on the exterior walls and with no pillars. During bombing in WW2, 4 bombs struck the Church, one of which pierced the dome, but none exploded. The Mostin saw this as a miracle, no one was hurt and the Church was not badly damaged. The included lunch in Mdina was next and we (at a table for 6) did not find the meal appetizing. Our group was overly crowded in with another larger group on the second floor of the restaurant and the food so highly peppered that much remained uneaten. Anyway we had vanilla ice cream for dessert which was soothing. After lunch we had free time to explore the town including St. Paul's grotto and the catacombs, a huge network of underground tunnels and caves originally used for burials but used as a shelter during WW2. Next we drove to the Dingli Cliffs, the highest point in Malta with a beautiful view over the ocean. Located next to the cliffs was the Church of Mary Magdalen which was originally built in the 15th century and has recently undergone extensive restoration. The tour ended after a walking tour of Mdina, a walled city on a hilltop that was the original capital of Malta until Valletta was founded by the Knights of St. John. There was a very interesting mix of Moorish, Spanish, Baroque and classical architecture with many picturesque narrow streets. From the ramparts we had a magnificent view stretching from St. Paul's Bay and past Valletta. Our guide for the day was very knowledgeable and provided insight on the history of Malta. All in all a very enjoyable day.

When to Get There

Mdina is magical year-round, though the main drag can become crowded during the peak summer months of June, July, and August. Come in early evening after the day-trippers have left to see the fortified city at its silent best. After dark, it’s bathed in an attractive golden light.

Highlights of Mdina

Mdina’s biggest attraction is St. Paul’s Cathedral. The baroque-style cathedral is dedicated to Malta’s patron saint, who supposedly came to the island in AD 60. While the exterior is restrained, the interior boasts an array of gilding, stonework, marble, frescoes, and elaborately decorated chapels.
