Get picked up at your hotel in Dubrovnik and hop in the air-conditioned minivan for the southward drive to Montenegro. And don't forget your passport! This white-water rafting excursion is an excellent way to see an off-the-radar destination and to experience this diminutive Balkan's countries excellent rugged nature.

After arriving at the Tara River camp, indulge in a hearty energy-giving breakfast of local delights. Listen to the guide explain proper rafting techniques and safety procedures. After breakfast, get outfitted for the day on the Tara River and then hop aboard your raft and begin paddling into the Tara River Gorge. Pass waterfalls and natural springs, tall cliffs, ancient monasteries, old water mills and shepherds tending to their flock of lambs. Go by charming villages as you cruise through Durmitor National Park.

As the raft snakes down the river, learn from your guide some facts about the area -- that the Tara River Gorge is the longest canyon in Europe and the second longest in the world after the Grand Canyon.

About 15 miles (25 kilometers) later, reach the central rafting stop and sit down at a local restaurant for a hearty lunch of local dishes. Take some free time after lunch to do some exploring and then, in the late afternoon, head back to Dubrovnik.

Our day started out by being picked up by our wonderful tour guide, Ivan, at 6am. When leaving from Dubrovnik, it is about a 4 hour drive to and from the rafting camp in Montenegro. However, Ivan was very informative and was happy to answer any questions we had. About an hour into the drive the scenery became spectacular. Ivan even stopped at a couple of places so we could take pictures. It was a mountainous drive with curves and bumps, so be prepared if you have motion sickness. Once at the camp, it was actually much cooler than we expected aka you may want to bring a light jacket because you are high up in the mountains compared to the 90F in Dubrovnik. You are given breakfast before getting set with your wetsuit and helmet. You are then taken is smaller off-road vehicles down to the river upstream. There was very little instruction given, other than to paddle when he said paddle. My group consisted of 60yrs x2 and 30yrs x2. We had only had 1 prior experience rafting in Colorado and had down an intermediate there. This route had no sharp turns or drop-offs but there were definitely rapids that required you to hold on for. The two in front definitely got mouthfuls of water at points. You stop off twice for breaks, and to see waterfalls. However, be aware that the drinks they offer you are extra. Overall it was a great experience for me 30yrs but for my mother of 60yrs it was maybe a little much.

This was my first time rafting and this day trip was fun! If you're used to long drives, love filling up your passport with stamps and like experiencing new activities in new places, this trip is for you. Montenegro is stunning and our driver was very friendly. Take euros on the raft for a drink!

Overall, it was a great day. It is a long drive from Dubrovnik to Montenegro and the border crossing's can take hours when busy but the drive back is spectacular so don't fall asleep. Definitely not "white water" rafting but still makes for a nice day. Beef lunch was fantastic. Driver was also great

Here's the low down: Summary: Over-priced and Under-thrilling. Perhaps better for families with small children and money to burn...? Pros: 1. The scenery in Montenegro is beautiful, which makes for an interesting drive in that section. Bosnia and Herzegovina less so. 2. You get two good sized meals as part of the trip. 3. Watching our driver get held up at the Bosnian boarder and having to bribe boarder control with 10 EUR to pay for their drinks was pretty amusing. 4. Once getting to the rafting, watching what looked like Bosnia's Girls Gone Wild was extremely amusing. Many meatheads and their ladies getting into rafts with beer and liquor. At least 5 girls mid-way through the trip we're hunched over with their boyfriends holding their hair back and I now have an image of a girl throwing up on herself in the raft burnt to memory. Both ridiculous and unexpected at the same time. Cons: 1. Ensure you pack EUR. There's no mention of this on the site, which meant no one in our group had money that they could spend whilst on the trip and out of Croatia for the day. 2. Don't expect free drinks, even though meals are included. I felt somewhat cheated having to pay for a coffee with my breakfast even though I didn't have EUR, which they didn't tell us to bring and soft drinks with lunch after paying 125 on a day tour. Water from the river is freeYes, we were actually quoted this! 3. The rapids in mid summer ARE NOT the advertised class III or IV rapids. The whole river is slow and at most you may get class I-II. The river swells in Spring, so if you're after exhilaration, book then. 4. Expect your day to be split 80:20 to time in the car and time spent rafting. 5. It's not particularly well organised. Getting in the rafts was total chaos and we wasted a lot of time stood on a very small bank with about 100 other people having no idea what was happening alongside some very excited eastern Europeans throwing rafts around and drinking liquor. 6. If you are on a tight schedule, I would not recommend booking this. We returned 2 hours later than scheduled, missed our dinner reservation and almost missed our flight home. It would have been far more tolerable had I not paid so much money for a pretty second rate experience. I've paid significantly less for excellent rafting in Canada, so I didn't think that this was worth it.

The views were stunning along the drive and we did have a couple of photo-stops. The problem was that from Dubrovnik, we drove from 5 hours to get to the breakfast area started at 6am, breakfast at 10.45 when we booked on the information that drive would be around 3.5 hours total. Then we had another 30min drive to the rafting location. Once at the rafting start site, it was organised chaos. Our group were left with no leader for around 40 mins. The rafts were being carried down by staff and as there were so many rafters, people were being shoved out of the way and even hit with the rafts. One lady in my group was knocked over! The rafting was pleasant enough. We didn't have an English-speaking guide which was unfortunate. The scenery was beautiful. The main pit stop for the rafting at the waterfalls was far too busy with lots of people drinking and tossing their cans into the surrounding areas. Not very pleasant. Very long day even longer due to border stops but OK.

Overall this tour was very good. We me and two friends were on vacation in Dubrovnik and we liked getting the chance to visit the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. We enjoyed the rafting and the landscape around the Tara River was absolutely stunning. We also liked the food served after the rafting. There were a few things that I and/or my friends did not like about this trip: - The drive from Dubrovnik to the Tara river is very, very long about four hours one way and I can't remember that being stated in the information about the tour. This means that you will spend way more time sitting in a car than rafting. - We felt that our driver drove pretty recklessly. The roads in the region are narrow and often with steep cliffs on one side and we would have liked a calmer driving style. - The actual rafting was a bit too easy, even for someone like myself with no previous rafting experience.

The best part of this tour was the company! The driver, Ivan, was phenomenal, giving a wonderful history and guided tour as the four of us made our way to the rafting adventure. He was literally the best part of the whole experience! Some notes that I think will be helpful: we were able to leave our gear and valuables in the trunk of the car, so if you feel inclined to bring your phone for pictures, you can without having to bring it on the rafting portion of the tour. Also, you are given a wet suit, water shoes, vest and helmet. At the end of the trip, enclosed outdoor showers are available, as well as small changing rooms. Wear your comfy clothes, as the car ride is a couple hours. Our rafting guide spoke no English past go and stop, and we were unable to get drinks at the bar halfway thru, as our skipper was inclined to stay on the raft and smoke, and not vouch for our drinks. The food is good, the views are amazing, and if you're lucky enough to get Ivan, you'll be in for a real treat!

This was a full day event and it was alot of fun. It was cold while we were there and we were provided with wetsuits for the trip. The waters were not as white-water as they would be in the spring, but it was still lovely with moments of adventure. The views, driver, guides, and food were all amazing. I would recommend this trip!

Our driver and guide was Vid. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The drive is long but interesting As you pass through Bosnia into Montenegro. The rafting was calm the day we went but the scenery Was beautiful. There were 7 of us and we all agree without Vid who gave us so much detail and Information and interacted with us it wouldn't been as great a day.

Amazing trip! Views were stunning, and rafting was super fun! However, we had no quide with us, only a bus driver who did not tell much about the surroundings etc. Nevertheless, this was a suberb experience! Rafting was also very safe, yet enough fun. We had a five years old local girl in our boat with her father who is a rafting guide. This tells something about how dangerous it is....

The drive is really long, the tour guide on the bus however was brilliant! Once you finally get to the camp for breakfast 4 hours later you are met by nobody who speaks English serving a very suspect breakfast. You then get in another car to be taken down to the start of the rafting, where it is a complete free for all with around 100 people randomly jumping into rafts with no leadership or coordination what so ever. The leader of our raft sat in silence, only saying 'row' or 'stop' every now and again, the raft was literally silent until somebody broke the tension. Some advice on how to raft or information on the gorge would have been brilliant. Also, it is a lazy river, how this can be passed as white water rafting is beyond me. You get splashed maybe once or twice but if you're looking for an adrenaline rush, don't go. It is all very strange. The fish afterwards was nice, the meat was horrendous. Would not recommend at all and what you seem to be paying for is the 8 hour round trip.

We truly loved this excursion. The van picked us up on time in the morning, we had a very friendly driver who was giving us briefings and explanations of the surroundings all the way, photo stops and on top of it all, a great rafting experience. The rapids are not difficult at all, yet so much fun!

I highly recommend this tour. The canyon is beautiful, the water is crystal clear and refreshing, and it was just a lot of fun. I knocked off one star only because it was class one or two rapids not the advertisement of class three and four. The driver was also excellent and great conversation to pass time during the drive.

Really fun trip. Great for beginners, it's not super difficult so experienced white water rafters shouldn't really bother rapids aren't much above a Class 2. The car ride to the river takes almost 5 hours so plan for that! I would definitely recommend this to travelers in Dubrovnik who want to get out of the city for a full day.

The journey was over 5 hours and the mini bus driver keep stopping which added to the length. It would be better if they had two drivers. White water rafting was very tame and not worth the drive. The scenery was however amazing! Did not get breakfast till 1130 and then lunch at 4pm.

Loved this tour! Had an enjoyable trip down the river and although it wasn't fast flowing in July it was a great experience. The tour guide, Ivana, was lovely and so was the driver! It's a long day with most of it spent travelling to the site but definitely worth it.
