Meet a driver at your hotel, then travel to the first stop of the day, Ghar Dalam Cave and Museum, where archeologists have discovered traces of human activity that date back 7,400 years, animal bones that are the earliest evidence of humans that’s been found on the island.

Find out what scientists have learned about prehistoric times on Malta by excavating layer after layer of the cave, and visit the nearby garden, which is planted with indigenous species and trees.

Following your time at Ghar Dalam Cave, continue to Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, set high on a hill on the southern edge of Malta. Hagar Qim is a megalithic temple complex, and along with Malta’s other megalithic structures, is among the oldest religious sites on earth.

Just a short distance away, Mnajdra Temples offer more ancient architecture, including a fascinating limestone temple that aligns with the equinoxes and solstices. Following your time at Mnajdra Temples, begin the return trip to your original departure point, where this tour concludes.

Well organised and on time - email to confirm hotel pick up time the night before and minibus direct back rather than with main coach. Good guide.

Disappointing, not what was expected
, Jun 2022
Guide was excellent story teller but I feel that was exactly what it was, a story. The temples themselves were disappointing not at all what expected, they had been reconstructed and new, not authentic for a ruin. The electric car was a life saver. The cave was the best part of the tour

We weren’t sure what to expect when we signed up for this tour, however, our tour guide made it memorable. He was very knowledgeable about the temples. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he had an archeology degree as his discussions were full of germane comments about what was in front of us. He answered any questions, his English was excellent, and he did a good job of projecting his voice so all could here.

The temples we're fascinating to see and hear about. The cave was fairly interesting- not really worth visiting on its own, but good as part of the temples tour.

What can I say except for brilliant. The your guide was extremely knowledgeable about the 3 different temples in which we saw that day. It was a wonderful trip. I highly recommend.

Our half day tour of the prehistoric temples was amazing. Our guide was knowledgeable and provided commentary in 3 languages. Our first stop was Ghar Dhalam, a prehistoric cave originally containing animal remains that had been washed into the cave by floods. There were several layers exposed by excavation, from hippopotami about 18000 years old (they had migrated to Malta on a land bridge during the ice age) through deer and the most recent being domestic animals from about 6000 years ago. The cave was about 5 m high near the entrance and about 2 m in the deepest area at about 100 m in. There was an interesting stalactite and stalagmite. Next we drove to the Hagar Qim/Mnajdra temple complex right on the coast south of Mdina. We parked next to the Hagar Qim temple which contained the largest known megalith weighing about 20 tonnes. This prehistoric site consists of a group of megalithic buildings that were built in the late neolithic period around 5,000 yrs.ago. The buildings are made of Globigerina limestone megaliths. About 500 m downhill from Hagar Qim is the Mnajdra Temple which consists of 3 separate buildings. It is thought that structure was built Ggantija Phase, around 3600-3200 BC and are made of globigerina and coralline limestone which is more resistant to weathering. The door is oriented so that the sun shines straight in at the equinoxes and at an angle that illuminates the corners of the room at the solstices, so the temple was used to keep track of the seasons. Both sites are sheltered to protect them from the elements. There is no modern development around the temples so the setting seems more "original" than many of the other sites we have visited which were within the developed cities. We returned to our hotel after a very full morning.

Good value. Great for those who haven't planned months in advance to see the Hypogeum. Would be even better if it could include the Hypogeum.

I'm familiar with the temples in Malta and went on previous tours I only went on this to show a person who has never been to Malta a bit about our history. Sadly, the tour bus arrived 40 minutes late to pick us up at our hotel, which means we had very few seats left on the coach an the tour started late we were forced to sit on a seat that only had a small obstructed window due to the rear emergency exit. The tour guide was annoying he kept on referring to things that were not relevant to the tour such as Malta not having gas lines and needing to use LPG cylinders, or about asylum seekers from Africa, etc. Also, the language of the tour was English, German and Italian, and the tour guide kept on repeating the same things over and over. When we got to the second temple the electric carts he advised us we could hire to return up the long and steep hill was not available. This meant less capable tour members were stuck having to force their bodies back up the 500m steep climb. Some had walking sticks etc. It really was something the tour guide should have checked before sending the group down the hill as it was a safety issue. Qar Dalam was boring, but will all the bones in the show cabinets I'm glad my dog wasn't there. At least she would have loved it I guess! The Temples are great but this was an awful tour. I would go with another tour company sadly.

How good were the tour guides for this trip? They were amazing patient beyond belief with the very rude English traveller and his even more impatient none English wife. Ok we were picked p from our hotel at the agreed time and taken to St Juliens where we were asked to disembark the mini bus and wait for a larger coach yes the coach took about half an hour to get to us but this was purely down to the traffic and could not be helped. The poor reps got it in the ear again and again and again from this awful couple demanding their money back insisting they had been lied to being completely rude and obnoxious! BUT they kept their calm and did everything they could to find out what was happening with the coach and why it was delayed. My partner and I chilled beneath a shady tree after all we were on holiday what was the problem with a small delay? When the coach arrived yet again this couple were making it very plain that they were not happy and an apologetic tour guide tried to appease them. We set off only to have to stop to join a main highway we thought however up piped Mrs Moan why are we stopped? Why aren't we driving driver? OMG I thought shut up! As it turned out there had been an accident and the office were advising the driver of a 54 seat coach which route he should take to avoid this. After all the rudeness from Mr and Mrs Moan they had the nerve and the cheek to not even listen to the very educated and knowledgeable guide and wonder around the displays on their own!! I would like to apologise for my fellow Englishman we are not all as rude as he was. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour the amazing commentary the history and the knowledge shared by the tour guide and what an amazing sight the prehistoric temples are. After this stop we went on with a running commentary of all other places of interest we passed and stopped at the underground caves of Ghar Dalam this is part of the tour I didn't realise was included. The museum houses many fossils and skeletons found during the excavations and is an amazing piece of history and the caves themselves were a sight to behold. please take this tour and I hope Mr and Mrs Moan don't accompany you !

I travel to Malta FOUR times a year and love everything about the island. Booking this trip was the worst ever experience I have ever had in a quarter century of visiting the island. They didnt show up and I was unable to contact anyone. Eventually spoke with a local contact in Malta who really just couldnt be bothered. All they did was take my money. I never leave bad reviews, understand we all have jobs and a living to make. However, avoid this company like the plague.

This was a very interesting tour and the sites are fabulous. Our tour guide, Mario, was the best! He was so knowledgeable about the temples and the historical periods as well as sharing so much information just about Malta and the areas we traveled through to get to the temples. I think the tour could be expanded to include Tarxien Temple as well. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend it for history buffs.

I really enjoyed this tour. Its amazing to think that these temples were built 800 years before the pyramids.
