Tour by yourself, take lots of photos, have a gelato ... no. Find a group tour ... maybe. Excellent tour for those interested in history. The buildings are still intact since the 5th century. The tour guide was knowledgeable and interesting. This was my favorite town so far as it is quaint and stress free for touring.

This guided tour of Ravenna's churches with mosaics exceeded our expectations. Our guide was knowledgeable and helped us to understand the history behind the churches and the decorations. Each setting was different but all of the mosaics were vibrant with colors of the deepest blue to the brightest gold. Our guide moved us from church to church in a relaxed but efficient manner. I don't think we would have seen as much without her.

Ravenna's mosaics are legendary, but scattered over the city, so taking a tour is highly recommended. Manuela was kind, patient, and very knowledgeable. It was good to go with someone so passionate about her subject and eager to share her knowledge. I was tired and it seemed a long day.

I have taken many tours with Viator in the past but this by far was the best. From start to finish it was perfection. I spent the day with Manuela who went above and beyond and was the best tour guide I have ever had!! She met me right on time at the train station and her knowledge and personality goes above and beyond what you would expect from a tour guide. It was like being with the best history teacher you have ever had with a great personality to match! She answered all my questions, let me take all the pictures I wanted and took me to a separate suburb of Ravenna to see another church that was amazing. Ravenna has some of the most exquisite mosaics and interiors I have ever seen inside the most humble looking churches from the outside. I strongly recommend that you request for her and that you use a guide when going there. If you were to see the churches on your own I doubt if you would find them all and even if you did, not knowing the history would not make it as worthwhile as it was for me. It was worth every penny. This was an excellent private tour, the only guided tour we took in our recent visit to Italy. We decided to engage a guide because of the unique wealth of mosaics in Ravenna, its remarkable position as the last capital of the Roman Empire in the west, and the centre of the attempted recapture by the Eastern Roman Empire in the following century. The transition from the declining Roman Empire to early medieval Europe is vividly captured in this town as it is in few others, if any. Manuela was an excellent guide. She was very helpful and responsive in organizing details before the tour. The tour itself was well structured, and Manuela certainly knows what she is talking about. Given the number of sites in one day, it is a bit of a whirlwind, but Manuela was very good at putting the sites in context of the history and politics of their day, and highlighting the differences between late Roman, Ostrogothic, and Byzantine mosaics. The sites and the mosaics are stunning, standing out in undiminished splendour and intense colours after a millennium and a half. Those of Justinian and Theodora and their courtiers had been on my must-see list for decades, and it was a thrill to finally stand before them in the church of San Vitale.
