Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Your day trip starts with a drive from Rome by comfortable coach to Assisi, a UNESCO-listed town in the beautiful hills of Italy’s Umbria region. During the drive, learn about Assisi’s historical significance, most famously as the birthplace of Italy’s patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi.

When you arrive, visit the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s biggest pilgrimage destinations, where Catholics come to see St. Francis’ tomb. Then head to a local restaurant for a 3-course lunch of Italian favorites such as pasta al pomodoro (tomato and basil sauce) and roast chicken with potatoes.

After lunch, continue your Assisi tour at the Basilica of St. Clair (Basilica di Santa Chiara), named for St. Clair, who was a pupil of St. Francis’, followed by the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels (Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli), located at the bottom of the hill where Assisi sits. Learn about the Porziuncola here, which St. Francis restored after he received a vision of Jesus Christ.

Your day trip ends with the return drive to Rome.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Basilica di Santa Chiara
The building is characterized by the execution of the whole body with pink and white bands of Subasio stone and majestic climbing arches supporting the two sides of the church. The interior is structured like the upper Church of St. Francis with a single nave ending in a transept with a polygonal apse. Here too a gallery goes around the perimeter, however, contrary to St. Francis, at the height of the capitals of the pillars.

Wonderful tour of a magical city!

The tour of Assisi and Basilica di San Francesco was amazing. We were picked up at our hotel and taken to a central meeting point, and took an air conditioned bus to Assisi. We stopped at a ceramic factory along the way for a brief tour. The Basilica di San Francesco was breath-taking! Then we continued on to Assisi. Our tour guide from Rome, Mauro, was fantastic. Once we arrived in Assisi, we connected with a local tour guide, Marcella, who was very nice. My only complaint is that she rushed us to each location, not letting us stop to take pictures or enjoy the picturesque scenery. While I understand that we need to get to all the locations in a timely manner, the result was that we would get to our location ahead of schedule, and then have to waste 15-20 minutes waiting to see anything. A more leisurely pace would have been appreciated, especially since one lady in our group was having trouble keeping up. Assisi is simply gorgeous - as Mauro kept saying, "a hidden gem" - absolutely agree! The included meal was fine - nothing spectacular, but certainly appreciated. I highly recommend this tour to get a taste of Umbria and Assisi - I cannot wait to go back!

Small group of 10 people. Minibus with guide and driver. Usual stop for shopping and bathroom break enroute. Visited places are in the tour description. What made this tour were the guides. Excellent knowledge of the subject matter and history. The meal served in a local restaurant served family style was also very good. The tour is strenuous but we'll worth the expense. With the drive time it takes 10 hours.

This tour was one of the best we have done ....Picked up from hotel, our bus guide Rosella was great, once in Assisi the guide Stefan was brilliant, really out did himself, only 5 in group, lovely people, 2 from Spain and 1 from Mexico, he alternated between English and Spanish, his wealth of knowledge incredible, the city is gorgeous, lovely lunch, time to shop afterwards and then back to Rome and dropped off at our hotel, super day, thank you Viator you have done it again ...... now to Hong Kong !!! My wife, daughter and I were grateful to be picked up from our hotel even though the driver was 30 minutes late. We arrived at the departure location with considerable time to spare, however. The bus ride to Assisi was comfortable and scenic. Francesca, our guide, was very attentive and professional and kept the tour group moving efficiently in the very hot weather. Lunch was surprisingly tasty. My daughter has food allergies, and the tour guide and waitress at the restaurant were very accommodating. Although primarily known for St. Francis, Assisi is very quaint and picturesque. Be sure to take advantage of the local shops offering a variety of goods from Umbria. The local tour guide in Assisi was equally impressive and knowledgeable. As far as I'm concerned, it was money well spent.

Tour was fascinating and absolutely beautiful. Tour bus was nice in that it was a small group. We were not allowed to bring coffee or drinks on the bus which was disappointing considering how early in the morning we left. The stop at the ceramic factory was kind of strange. It really did not match the trip. Could have done without that even though it was interesting and we purchased some beautiful ceramics. Assisi was more than I had imagined. Absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend and would do it again.

Go to Assisi, not with this tour...

Go to Assisi, not with this tour. The tour specifies 15 people in the group. There were 41 people who spoke English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The huge group was hard to manage and we lost valuable time where we could see more of the sites because we were waiting on the laggers in the group.
